There was something wrong with his left eye. He'd gone to a little-used section of the ranch to be alone as he tried to figure out what the problem was. He closed his right eye and-

There was a rectangle in front of him. Just... randomly floating in the air.

He opened his eye out of shock.

Gone.

Close.

There.

Open.

Gone.

...Well then. He closed his right eye once more and looked at the rectangle. Printed on its grey surface were the following words:

In case of memory failure, install backup memory. Select one:
20% 2 O
40% 4 O
50% 6 O
60% 8 O
75% 10 O
85% 12 O
100% 14 O
(Okay)

The word "odd" came to mind. But if he was going insane, he might as well play along. Now how was he to select one?

He tapped one of the circles, and a smaller, solid circle appeared inside of it. He hadn't felt anything on contact, but something was there. Sort of. He selected the 100% one, figuring that that was how much of his memory he wanted back anyway. He wasn't sure what the other number stood for, but that was all right. He'd figure it out eventually.

He tapped the button labeled "Okay".

He froze.

Forcystus sat in the security room of the ranch, going through the security footage. Anything that turned out to be pornography courtesy of the ranch, he set to one side to discard later.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw movement on one of the screens. Looking up, he watched one of the Yuans blink a few times with a confused look on his face. Forcystus saw him reach out, and then freeze in that position.

Huh, he thought. With a mental shrug, he went back to sorting through the security footage.

Fifteen minutes, he looked up again. Yuan was still in the same position, and it didn't look as if he had moved yet.

Uh-oh.

Dropping a tape into a nearby rubbish bin, Forcystus got up and went in search of Kratos. He had a bad feeling about this.

Kratos arrived at a run, once Forcystus had properly explained the situation to him. Yuan was still frozen in the same position as Forcystus had described.

"Yuan?" He reached out and tapped Yuan on the shoulder. "Yuan?"

His body didn't move, not having enough pressure on it to force it to do so.

His left eye focused on the same spot, the other closed, his expression clearly stating that he was doing something insane in a "what the hell" manner. One hand reached out, a finger just finished tapping something in the air.

Kratos cursed under his breath and tried to see what it was that Yuan was staring at. He could see nothing, even when he closed one eye like Yuan. He almost reached out a hand to the same spot, but stopped, realising that if whatever it was that Yuan had touched was still there, it could do the same thing to him.

Hesitating for a moment, he did his best to lightly close Yuan's other eyelid, not wanting his eye to be damaged by being left too long without blinking, although he had a feeling that if any damage was going to occur, it had already been done. From when Forcystus first noticed Yuan's--problem, to when he had arrived, Kratos judged it was about twenty minutes.

After looking at Yuan for a few more minutes, Kratos placed a hand on Yuan's shoulder and teleported, taking him to the room Yuan had occupied while ill.

And still, there was nothing.

Awkwardly, Kratos managed to lift Yuan into the bed and laid him down. With incredible care, he pushed down on Yuan's pointing arm, lying it at his side.

He put two fingers against Yuan's neck, feeling for a pulse and at the same time watching his chest for movement.

Kratos sucked in his breath when he realised he could not feel a heartbeat, could not see Yuan's chest move. Could it be that Yuan was...

...No, that couldn't be it. No one died standing up and pointing at something no one could see. He would have fallen over. He wouldn't be so...stiff.

Getting an idea, he left the room and came back with a Panacea Bottle. He waved it under Yuan's nose a few times.

[OOC: Lemme predict the reply. :P]

Kratos corked the bottle. It seemed as though this was something other than an ordinary case of petrification.

He left and came back, carrying Boltzman's Book. Opening it to the section on paralysis and petrification, he began to struggle through it once again, with an even firmer resolve than before.

Nothing would happen for a very long time.

About an hour later, Kratos was wandering aimlessly through the ranch, mind still preoccupied with the difficult task of finding a way to restore his former lover's memory.

His mind still elsewhere, he glanced through an open door. He kept walking. Then he stopped.

He couldn't have possibly seen what he thought he had seen, could he?

Hurriedly, he retraced his steps and looked into the room once again. His double was sitting in a chair, reading an ancient book while wearing a tremendous scowl. That was nothing exciting.

What was exciting--or, more accurately, horrifying--was the sight of Yuan, lying stiffly in a bed with the oddest expression frozen on his face.

"What have you done to him?" Kratos shouted, running to Yuan's side. He tried to take Yuan's hand in his, but the half-elf's body was strangely resisting.

He had looked up at the sound of the hurried footsteps. He wasn't particularly pleased to see his double, but all things considered, he wasn't particularly surprised at his appearance.

"I did not do a thing," Kratos said, voice calm. "Forcystus found him standing and pointing at nothing. I took him here. A Panacea Bottle did nothing to restore him, so I am studying Boltzman's Book in hopes that there will be a section on healing a case like this."

...Yuan's hand was still warm, which ruled out him being somehow dead. As gently as he could possibly be, Kratos opened Yuan's fingers widely enough to slip his own in between and to hold his hand. It helped him calm down, but not much.

"I...see. Have you found anything yet?" he asked, voice far calmer than he felt.

"Nothing yet." Kratos flipped a page. "Then again, Boltman's Book is extremely difficult to decipher."

He resisted the urge to comment on his double's intellect, knowing it would be the same as insulting himself. Instead, he remained silent, gripping Yuan's hand as though it were a lifeline.

Silence filled the room. An hour passed with nothing to disturb the silence save for the rustling of paper.

Eventually, Kratos closed the book and stood.
